Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

Updated February 6, 2020

An outbreak beginning in Wuhan City, China caused by 2019 Novel Coronavirus is being monitored closely by the CDC, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Kendall County Health Department. Chinese health officials have reported thousands of infections in China and infection has spread worldwide. On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization declared this outbreak a "public health emergency of international concern" (WHO).

Symptoms of 2019-nCoV mimic those of the common cold or respiratory illness. If any of these symptoms persist, please call your healthcare provider or the Health Department:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Shortness of breath

The CDC believes symptoms may appear anywhere between 2 and 14 days after exposure and hypothesizes person-to-person spread. For guidance on cleaning and disinfection for schools and the workplace, please refer to the CDC Prevention Actions for flu

Along with the travel advisory shown above, the CDC has several key points:

  • The CDC and Department of State recommends that travelers avoid all travel to China and flights are now being rerouted from China to these airports
  • There is an ongoing outbreak of pneumonia first identified in Wuhan, China, caused by a novel (new) coronavirus.
  • Preliminary information suggests that older adults and people with underlying health conditions may be at increased risk for severe disease from this virus.
  • Chinese officials have closed transport within and out of Wuhan and other cities in the Hubei province.
  • Travelers from Wuhan to the United States, and other countries, may be asked questions about their health and travel history upon arrival.
