What is WIC?

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant women, postpartum and breastfeeding mothers, infants, and children up to age 5.

WIC provides nutrition education, breastfeeding support, health care and other service referrals, and free nutritious foods to eligible families. WIC is a federally funded nutrition program offered through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In Illinois, WIC is administered by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS).

WIC Helps Families

Families who participate in WIC can:

  • buy nutritious foods at local vendors with a WIC EBT card
  • learn more about healthy eating, breastfeeding, and proper growth and development from trained staff who listen, care, and want to help families reach their goals
  • access resources for healthy recipes and other health topics related to pregnancy, postpartum, and early childhood
