COVID-19 and Older Adults — Three Prevention Steps
Older adults and people of any age with underlying medical conditions are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19. The good news is that there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your loved ones:
Step 1. Keep germs away
- Frequently wash your hands with soap and water
- Keep your living space clean and disinfected
- Always use proper cough and sneeze hygiene
- Avoid receiving visitors, unless the visitor is providing an essential service
Step 2. Make a plan
- Identify and talk with someone who can help care for you if you get sick
- Have supplies, such as medicines and groceries on hand
- Find ways to have essential items brought to your home in the event you become ill
- Create and practice alternative methods of social interaction with family and friends
Step 3. Keep up with the situation and health recommendations in your area
- Stay home if you or a family member in your household is sick
- Stay home unless you need food, medicine, or medical care
- Wear a cloth face covering when away from home and unable to ensure social distancing
- When enjoying the outdoors, always stay at least 6 feet or more from others
If you do get sick with fever, cough, or shortness of breath, call your primary care physician immediately.
