Summer Heat and Children

When a child is having fun in the sun, they often don’t think about the importance of shade. Kids produce more heat during activities and sweat less, which is why they are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, especially on hot, humid days. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, infants and children up to 4 years of age are at greatest risk. Here are a few tips to prevent heat-related illness in children:

  • Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked open
  • Dress infants and children in loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing
  • Wear a wide brim hat, preferably with ventilation
  • Schedule outdoor activities carefully, for morning and evening hours
  • Stay cool with cool showers or baths
  • Stay hydrated

Seek immediate medical care if your child has been in the sun and has symptoms of heat-related illness such as; muscle cramps, pale and moist skin, a fever higher than 100.4°, nausea and vomiting. For a complete list of symptoms due to heat related illness, please click here.
