Human Bites
In cases of a student biting another student or a student biting an employee:
If the bite does not break the skin:
1. Cleanse the wound with soap and water, holding the wound under running water for 2 minutes.
2. Call the parents of the students involved (both biter and student bitten).
3. Complete a Student Accident Report for student and a First Report of Injury or Illness Report for faculty or school staff.
If the bite breaks the skin, but there is no visible blood:
1. Cleanse the wound with soap and water, holding the wound under running water for 3 minutes.
2. Call the parents of the students involved.
3. Complete a Student Accident Report for student and a First Report of Injury or Illness Report for faculty or school staff.
If the bite breaks the skin and the students/staff member is bleeding:
For Students:
1. Cleanse the wound with soap and water, holding the wound under running water for 3 minutes and cover the wound using approved First Aid procedures.
2. Call the parent of the bite victim.
• If the parent is contacted, inform them that the student should be picked up to receive medical attention as soon as possible. If the parent is contacted and has not picked up the student within 1 hour call 9-1-1.
• When the parent arrives, give him/her a copy of the Bite Resource Information Sheet (page 40).
• If the parent is contacted but is not able to pick up the student and take him/her for medical attention, inform the parent that the school will call 9-1-1 for medical assistance.
• If the parent cannot be reached within one hour, call 9-1-1.
3. Call the parent/guardian of the biter.
• Discuss the biting incident with parent/guardian.
• Give parent/guardian the Bite Resource Information Sheet.
• Advise parent to consult with a physician.
4. Complete a Student Accident Report.
